Modern pontoon bridges consists of several parts: approach, easement and floating (midriver) section. Bridge spans are laid over fixed floating piers (pontoons, rafts, barges, etc).

As a rule, such bridges are important where loose ground, deep water or other reasons impede or even make impossible construction of capital bridges. Besides, promptly-built bridges are used in rescue operations and other emergency situations.

Pontoon bridge design and construction has its own features. It is impossible in the presence of strong current and ice drift. Besides, these operations are seasonal by nature, and it is necessary to consider different water stand levels in various times of year. Another feature is lack of detailed normative documents and guidelines (at least, comparing to other sectors of construction). But the centuries of practice ensure construction of reliable and convenient structures.
