Hulls and Their Structural Components – Brief Overview

The ship hull is, in substance, a box beam consisting of a cover (a bottom and board shell and a decking) and framing (a skeleton).

The hull shape depends on its designation and operation conditions. When designing, water flow directions are to be taken into account, the capacity of main engines and deadweight are to be balanced and dimensions of locks and berths are to be considered. For each type of a vessel, the base of optimum hull shapes exists.

Complexity of calculations features design and creation of a ship hull. The fact is that the hull exists on the border of two ambiences – air and water – while the operation conditions are subject to considerable change during the voyage. Inside members and frames undergo multidirectional loads and simultaneously several types of deformations. Designers can base themselves on the experience of the centuries of ship construction and modern calculation methods and process mathematical modeling.
