Shipbuilding and ship repair technologies were developing along with development of vessel design. Nowadays, hundreds of scientific research results and experience gained for centuries are used to design a modern liner.
Traditionally, the notion of “shipbuilding technologies” means all the techniques of ship construction and certain mechanisms fabrication. Here can be mentioned riveting and electric welding, principled approaches to design (for example, by constituent parts or block), flow production and many other matters. New shipbuilding techniques are inseparably associated to use of computers and automation equipment. Automated metal bending is used in fabrication of hull components. Welding of parts is also automatic.
Special attention is given to CALS-methods. Currently, they are the most advanced approach to design and production of high-technology products including ship parts. In Russia, the ТК431 CALS Standards Technical Committee was organized which worked out a number of GOST R ISO 10303 standards. One of the advantages of applying technologies of such class is the possibility of determining maintenance and operation expenditures.
