More on shipbuilding technologies

Thousands of years ago, vessels were rush rafts and hollowed-out logs. Technologies of that primitive shipbuilding depended on accessible tools – axes and fire. With evolution of the mankind vessels increased in their size, got more complex and reliable. While the shipbuilding technologies diversified. People invented special tools, constructed special platforms, and designed special facilities and technologies.

With division of labor and specialization, the processes for every stage of construction, production of every part, design and calculation were invented. At the same time the process of replacing the human labor with the mechanism operation was going on, and the mechanisms were machines, technological complexes and, at last, robots. Nowadays, the usage of robotics in shipbuilding is one of the most prospective ways of industry development.

Let’s take a look at the guidelines of the development of modern shipbuilding techniques.

CALS Technologies

Modern hardware and software ensure a radical departure from conventional practice of design, construction and repair of vessels as well as of support of their operation. These are CALS technologies (from English Continuous Acquisition and Life cycle Support ). In Russian CALS means ИПИ (informational support of product life cycle).

Since modern shipbuilding market advances new requirements of assessment of product quality, a demand was created for implementing such technologies. They ensured, for example, to estimate expenses necessary for maintenance of the given level of vessel availability.

In Russia, national CALS standards are being developed. To this end the ТК431 CALS Standards Technical Committee was organized which worked out a number of GOST R ISO 10303 standards.

Laser and Plasma Technologies in Construction and Repair of Ships

Utilization of laser technologies in the shipbuilding industry is quite a prospective trend. Advantages of laser cutting before plasma or oxygen one involves high accuracy, absence of thermal deformations and scarves, as well as minimum cutting width gas-dust emissions. Industrial lasers make it possible to perform precision cutting of details from steel plates up to 20 mm thick. And at the same time the cutting machine can label and mark out details being processed. Unfortunately, laser technologies did not became common use in the domestic shipbuilding industry due to lack of industrial lasers of required power: over 2 kW for hull-processing and over 15 kW for welding of hull constructions.

Electroarc Vacuum Metal Refining

One of the new technologies in operation is refining of rolled metal products with electric arc in vacuum. The essence of the process is stable arcing appearing in the form of large quantity of randomly moving low-amperage electrical discharges between working surface and electrode system; in the course of the process rust and scale comes off the surface of the metal being worked. According to research data, the quality of refining meets requirements of international standards with observing ecological safety – this process employs no consumables used at common refining (shot, etching solutions). Besides, metal consumption of the equipment in operation and occupied production spaces decrease by 40%.

Machining Centers

Manufacture of hulls passes to regional centers capable of delivering production for several enterprises. For manufacture of hull elements of different three-dimensional curvature, automated rotary rolling bending is used. This technology provides lower necessary forces 15-20 times thus practically neutralizing elastic aftereffects.

Welding in Construction and Repair of Ships

Modern shipbuilding industry is impossible to imagine without utilization of welding. It is one of the principal technologies aimed at provision high-grade junction of metalwork with minimum consumption of materials and energy. To solve the task, welding machine is being designed equipped with geometrical and technological adaptation system; the machine is to perform split welding. This technology features with forming of total cross-section one-pass weld.
