At the ship-assembly yard, vessels are assembled of bulk units and sections, various ship facilities and equipment are installed; all those components manufactured at other shipbuilding enterprises.
The production cycle of the ship-assembly yard as a whole looks as follows:

Ship-assembly yard construction takes less time and money comparing to shipbuilding plants. However, ship-assembly yards are less independent, since they depend on many suppliers of manufactured products and other enterprises of the shipbuilding industry.
Limited scope of works makes such yard a highly-specialized enterprise. So, ship-assembly yard becomes most economic only in case of construction of a large series of ships. Ship-assembly yards are wide spread in Poland, Czech Republic as well as in the countries of South-East Asia (China, South Korea).
When forecasting the future of the shipbuilding industry, some experts abandon themselves to the idea that process-dedicated yards are going to become the principal form of ship-assembly production. While production based on traditional principles of ship building in accordance with the section method and application of portal bridge cranes will be held only at a few universal shipbuilding enterprises for construction of highly technical and new types of vessels.
Today, it is more appropriate to organize modern ship-assembly enterprises and complexes with yards and design offices on a technological specialization basis. Such corporations ensure association of ship-assembly yards of the same type thus decreasing expenses, enable ceasing other similar productions, optimize logistics and management processes as well as elaborate the unified marketing policy for all constituent enterprises and organizations. This way high economic performance is gained and production becomes more competitive.
Such corporations are often in the countries of South-East Asia. For example, China shipbuilding bases absorbed small and medium shipbuilding and ship-assembly yards and manufacturers of ship facilities. Another example is Japan Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Corporation comprising seven shipbuilding yards and several engineering enterprises; each yard works in accordance with its own shipbuilding program and can duplicate other by types of the ships in construction.
As for Russian shipbuilding enterprises, it’s not all as easy as it sounds. In order to join shipbuilding corporations, it is necessary to incorporate a company which takes lots of efforts and time.
