At shipbuilding yards, ships are constructed from the very scratch while onboard equipment, facilities and devices are not fabricated here. So, shipbuilding yards per se are very rare, usually they form part of a shipbuilding plant.

Shipbuilding yards differ in specialization. As a rule, it is reasonable – manufacturing production reduces overhead costs and time consumption as well as raises the quality and technological excellence, and so on.

The situation in Russia corresponds to that in the global shipbuilding industry. Today, our yards are inferior to those of Japan, China and European countries. Often, upgrade of old yards requires more funds than construction of new ones, but in every case large financial injections are necessary. Some steps to this end are taken. The projects of construction of new yards in the Primorsk Territory and on the North-West are developed, and negotiates with foreign partners are held.
