Ship power plants - Brief Overview

Ship power plants (SPP) is an assembly of systems and mechanisms consisting of main, auxiliary and electrical plant as well as general purpose systems and mechanisms. Main types of SPP:

  • installations with internal combustion engine, in general, diesels ones;
  • steam engines;
  • gas and steam turbines;
  • nuclear power plants;
  • mixed plants.

Every plant has its own advantages. Diesel plants are small in size while are very powerful. Today, about 90% of the world civil fleet is equipped with diesel SPP (95% in Russia).

Steam turbine has no reciprocal elements, so it is more reliable. However today, ship steam turbines as main plants are used only at large container and war ships. Steamers are the only exception; here steam plants (turbine + steam generator) are used.

Gas power turbines have advantages of diesel and steam plants, their setting-up procedures are short and acceleration is high. Gas turbine are manufactured nearly everywhere.
