More on sea and river transportation

Sea Transportation

Globalization of the world trade as well as domestic companies’ entering the international market suppose free movement of resources and goods which is impossible in the absence of the marine transport. Despite the development of automobile, railway and air transportation, need for overseas traffic is still of immediate interest. Over 80% of cargoes in the world are transported by means of sea transport.

The distinguishing characteristic of the modern stage of the international sea transportation is growing number of market participants owing to developing countries, the commercial fleet of which counts at least 15% of the world’s tonnage.

Sea transportations feature high level of reliability and are usually anticipated by conclusion of a forwarding agreement.

When sea transport is used, the cargoes are kept in ports’ outdoor and inside storages, and after they are shipped by automobile and railroad transport.

Container carriage is the most economic and advanced kind of freightage used both in international and inland traffic. Standard containers keep cargo safe and simplify cargo handling in transport terminals. So, container carriers transport the major part of maritime traffic. In Russia, container transportations are an important sector of the external economic activity.

Legal Control of Carriage of Goods by Sea

The standards of international individual maritime law are used for legal control of international carriage of goods by sea.

The character of activities performed by transport organizations also affect shipping terms. On this basis, special transport legislation specifies all features of the legal regulation of transportation agreements by various modes of transport. Legal regulation of carriage of goods by sea is specified in the Merchant Shipping Code of the Russian Federation.

River Transportation

Inland waterways of the Russian Federation continuing over 100 thousand km along with their unique hydraulic engineering installations constitute our national wealth. They are frequently used in the transportation service of 68 constituents of the Russian Federation: transport of cargoes including bulky ones, passengers, tourism, and export/import transportation. The entire cargo transportation process by river is a rather complicated set of technical, commercial and financial operations. River transportations depend on the time of year. As a rule, rivers are navigable from April till November.

As for river transport, freight traffic differs by kinds of fleet used. That is, cargo can be transported by self-propelled and non-propelled fleet or by means of mixed (river-sea-going) ships. The transportations can be direct and local (that is transportations by the port fleet).

The largest national inland waterway carriers are the North Western Shipping Company, Volga Shipping, Azov-Don Shipping Company, and Moscow River Shipping Company as well as Palmali Shipping. These companies perform about 80% oil transportation and about 55% general cargo carriage by Russian rivers.

Legal Control of Carriage of Goods by River

The procedure for the conclusion of the agreement for cargo carriage by inland waterway transport as well as documentation system and their legal effect are similar to the railroad transportation.
