The ship features in its isolation from the outer world. However, it is necessary to maintain communication with the world, other ships, coast stations, ports, etc. Communication equipment is used to this end. Such simplest devices as megaphone, semaphore as well as modern satellite communication systems including global marine and safety system (GMDSS) and satellite phones can be used as the ship communication equipment.

In accordance with international conventions and domestic Russian legislation, GMDSS equipment is to be installed at passenger and cargo ships with deadweight over 300 tons and some other ships. The employment of the system requires training of specialists, design of dedicated GMDSS equipment and development of legal norms. The activities in this direction have been enough prosperous. Over 15 000 people complete their training in special centers.

In addition to communication with the coast and other ships, it is necessary to communicate orders and other information onboard. The dedicated command broadcast apparatus is to meet SOLAS command broadcast facility requirements. Whenever possible, it is to be integrated into other engineering systems including fire alarm system.
