More on optical devices

Optics are traditionally used for onboard environment observation: binoculars, stereo telescopes, marine binocular telescopes, measurement devices, periscopes, optical position-finding devices, IR devices and so on.

Types of Optics

Standard and prismatic binoculars acquired wide recognition long ago. Prismatic binoculars provide higher zoom rate and their visual space is wider comparing to a standard binoculars. However, large quantity of lenses and prisms reduces their candlepower. In this connection, prismatic binoculars with high light loss are used in the daytime and standard ones – at night.

Stereo telescopes are used as one of components of the lookout station equipment. Their operating principle is similar to that of prismatic binoculars and they are used for observation in the daytime. This type of optics differs in high stereoscopic vision and provides more relief image.

Lookout stations and large war ship are equipped with such complex optics as distance-measuring theodolites. They are used for distant object observation and their distance measurement.

Marine binocular telescopes consist of a telescope and wide-angle eyepieces. The device is installed on a stand or tripod ensuring 360° horizontal and -20 … +85° vertical rotation. It is equipped with sighting device comprising a sight point and a ring.

Optical position-finding devices ensure object bearing and determination of their coordinates. It helps to raise rescue operation effectiveness when sending out light SOS.

Technological Evolution

Electronics evolution of the XX century led to creation of laser rangers and localizers, video sighting devices, IR vision devices, astro-orientation and astronavigation systems. Periscopes developed from simplest optical devices to most complicated laser, television and thermal imaging channel observing systems with high precision periscopic astronavigation systems.

IR vision devices have become popular lately. Their operational principal is based on irradiation of an object with invisible IR-rays and conversion of reflected radiation into visible light by means of a special receiver.

Thermal imagery devices are high-tech optical devices intercepting thermal emissions of various objects and help to recognize them in the conditions of complete darkness or low visibility (smoke or fog). Marine thermal imagery devices make ship control safe even in the conditions of complete darkness ensuring seeing of surrounding barriers, beacons, floating boards, logs, ballasting down objects, men overboard, unimproved port facilities, other vessels, and so on. This makes them irreplaceable in safety operations as well as in search and rescue activities.

Thermal imagery devices form images in the middle-wave thermal and light range and some models form them in the long-wave range. These devices are compatible with the majority of multifunctional displays or monitors. They can also be connected to multifunctional plotting devices/displays used with electronic navigation charts.

Situation on the Market

Foreign manufacturers from developed countries occupy a significant share of this market sector. They have high-tech equipment, wide experience and long-standing traditions. However, Russian companies are also active.

In our country, enterprises working in this field have been focusing the defense industry. Everything have changed with transition to market economy. Today, the domestic market is saturated with a wide range of optical devices and facilities produced both in Russia and CIS countries and in foreign countries (key positions belong to manufacturers from Germane, Italy, USA and others).
