Wartsila and Samsung Are to Design Gas-Powered Ships

March 26, 2010

Wärtsilä and Samsung Heavy Industries have signed a cooperation agreement on development of new liquefied natural gas-powered (LNG-powered) ships, reported Sovfrakht.

Wärtsilä is to produce propulsion machinery that is large dual-fuel engines and mechanical propulsion equipment. Samsung is to design ships and LNG power plants. Due to dual-fuel engines, CO2 emissions to be cut by 20-25%, nitric oxide and other compounds by 90%.

It is a reminder that on Wednesday, March 18, 2010, an international forum dedicated to environmental issues in overseas transportation took place. The organizer of the First Class Exchange Forum was Germanischer Lloyd Group. The agenda comprised an issue of LNG (liquefied natural gas) usage as an alternative ship fuel.
