Advanced IT solutions for shipbuilding object design - training already in university

April 02, 2010

Advanced IT solutions for shipbuilding object design - training already in university On New Year’s eve, a contract on collective contribution to education progress in the area of project shipbuilding disciplines was singed in the solemn atmosphere. Such an ambitious project was bound by an agreement between OAO “Admiralteyskie Verfi”, Saint-Petersburg State Marine Technical University (SPbSMTU), GOU IVE Petrovsky College and OOO “AVEVA”.

Under the terms of the agreement, AVEVA provides licenses for its software and all necessary training materials both in the teaching class of SPbSMTU and Petrovsky College. Educational institutions, in turn, include into their curricula classes on training to work in 3D design environment using advanced solutions by AVEVA. OAO “Admiralteyskie Verfi”, leader in the shipbuilding industry of Russia and lasting partner of AVEVA, will provide students an opportunity of undergoing practical training on its base.

The agreement was signed by chief executives of the four parties: V. L. Alexandrov, CEO of OAO “Admiralteyskie Verfi”, K. P. Borisenko, rector of SPbSMTU, E. V. Ivanov, director of Petrovsky College, and Dirk M. Drozd, CEO of OOO AVEVA.

AVEVA has been successfully cooperating with leading industry universities. For some years, the company has been working in close rapport with RSU of Oil and Gas named after I. M. Gubkin, source of manpower for O&G industry of Russia and CIS. Due to this collaboration, the university students have the opportunity of studying up-to-date design systems of AVEVA and get necessary skills and experience.

Today, not all educational institutions are capable of providing their students with opportunity of applying knowledge to practice as early as in process of training. However, it is evident that there is no more valuable employee than that one who has already learnt the ways of applying one or another theory directly at a dockyard or design-engineering bureau. Due to the quadripartite agreement, students will have the opportunity of taking a close look at operation of a shipbuilding company and the place of up-to-date IT in it.

“Acquisition of necessary knowledge and practical skills as early as at the university is the most favorable way of personnel training for the shipbuilding industry. Even now students are to be taught in advanced design and production management technologies since the largest yards all over the world use present-day CAD. AVEVA, for its part, is ready to provide specialized educational institutions with necessary software and assist teachers in compiling training modules,” says Sergey Sypchenko, shipbuilding business development director of OOO AVEVA.

Saint Petersburg State Marine Technical University founded in 1930 is the only university of Russia teaching marine engineers at three main faculties. Its graduates are world-class specialists in design, construction and operation of sea-going vessels, facilities ensuring exploration and production of oil, gas and other underground resources of the marine shelf.

GOU IVE Petrovsky College is an award winner of the Saint-Petersburg quality prize of 2004. This is multi-functional multidisciplinary educational institution of continuous professional education. Its graduates gain state-recognized diplomas and have the opportunity of going onto further study in specialized universities, available are both full-time and correspondence external studies. Each student can acquire the knowledge of a foreign language and extra professional skills.

OAO “Admiralteyskie Verfi” is one of the leading shipbuilding companies of Russia. More than 2600 vessels of various types and classes left its staples. Among them are more than 300 submarines (of that 41 are nuclear powered). The central activities of the company are design, production and upgrading civil and navy vessels of various types. Its productive capacity and equipment ensure construction of vessels meeting international standards. For 15 years, the company implements and uses advanced solutions of AVEVA in shipbuilding design.
