Sweden Revealed Engineering Data of a New Generation Submarine

March 09, 2010

The government of Sweden has revealed some technical parameters of a new generation submarine. The design contract was awarded to Kockums shipbuilding company. According to Lenta.ru, the submarine project was given code A26. The submarine is designated for conducting operations in coastal waters but also is capable of cruising in high seas.

As the promulgated terms of reference says, A26 submerged displacement is 1.9 thousand tons. The overall length is 63 meters while beam is 6.4 meters. Four torpedo tubes of 530 mm and one all-purpose compartment for secondary armament are to be provided at A26. According to expectations, the submarine crew will amount from 17 to 26 people and its cruising capacity will amount several weeks.

The new submarine is to be of diesel-stirling-electrical. This property is to be inherited from previous generation Gotland-type submarines. These were the first in the world using air-independent Stirling engine. A26 is expected to accelerate up to 20 knots, and using only Stiring engines up to 5 knots.

It was earlier reported that the new submarine is to be equipped with enhanced sonars and watch facilities. Besides, it is to be constructed using Stealth-technology thus decreasing its visibility as compared to Gotland. A26 is to be used predominantly in the Baltic Sea.
