USA Care for Safety: a Vessel with Radiometer Launched

February 18, 2010

According to Sovfracht Marine Bulletin, at the present time, the USA with growing frequency investigate new technologies applicable in national security protection and border surveillance. Particularly, control measures in airport border zones and at land boundaries were tightened. But the government disregarded one more issue – port complexes being the most vulnerable components of the American infrastructure.

For example, about 40% of all the cargoes imported to the USA pass through the port of Los Angeles. And 24-hour work stoppage in case of any emergency would cost the Government of the USA USD 1 bln.

Previously the terrorist attack prevention at USA ports was due to physical inspection by humans and dogs. However, in the end of January, 2010, in Los Angeles there was launched a vessel carrying equipment and personnel for inspection and possible detection of Weapons of Mass Extermination in the cargoes of vessels entering the port.

According to the press-service of the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, this could be the only vessel of such class in the world.

The ship’s cost is reported to be USD 3 mln.

It is equipped with highly advanced technologies and developments of American scientists, particularly, with radiation detection equipment. The vessel also carries a portable unit for submarine inspection through hull which is to help searching for explosives in the conditions nil visibility. The unit can dip down to 1000 meters. The powerboat is also equipped with a submarine sonar.
