January and February Cargo Transshipment Volume in Ports of the Azov-Don Basin Grew by 18%, Reaching 1.15 mln. Tons

Marine News of Russia with reference to information from the Azov-Don State Basin Management for Waterways and Navigation report that in January and February, the cargo transshipment volume in ports of the Azov-Don Basin grew by 18% as compared to the last year, and reached 1,148,809 thousand tons.

Particularly, agricultural product export shipment grew by 14.2% (up to 665.545 thousand tons), metal scrap by 83% (up to 30.646 thousand tons), metals by 3.9% (up to 24.523 thousand tons), and coal by 8.5% (up to 132.349 thousand tons).

The area of responsibility of the Azov-Don State Basin Management for Waterways and Navigation comprises river Don from Tsimlyanskoe Reservoir to the Sea of Azov (excluding Konstantinovsky and Nikolaevsky hydroschemes) and the Azov-and-Don Canal in the north-west part of the Taganrog Bay. Besides, the Management is responsible for navigation in feeders of river Don – Seversky Donets and Manych rivers. The total length of waterways under the responsibility of the Management amounts to 800 km. The cargo turnover of ports of the Azov-Don Basin grew in 2009 by 9% as compared to the last year, and reached 20.781 mln. tons.
