Sofkomflot Accepted for Operation Large-Capacity Tanker

December 10, 2009

On December 2, 2009, the fleet of Sovkomflot Group was replenished with a modern high-technology large-capacity tanker of Suezmax type; the tanker was given a name of SKF Surgut.

157.3 thousand ton tanker is designated for transportation of crude oil, and is 274 m length, 48.0 m beam and 17 m extreme draught. The vessel meets safety requirements of the American ABS Classification Society in full and can be operated in any navigation area.

The vessel was freighted by Chevron, one of the largest international petroleum companies, and upon completion of formalities at the shipbuilding yard, it will go to the first port of loading.

Construction of the vessels of this size at Russian shipbuilding enterprises did not seem possible until recently. However, new shipbuilding facilities make it possible to count that large-capacity vessels will be built in Russian Federation already in 2014. On November 18 in Bolshoy Kamen, Sovkomflot Group and United Shipbuilding Company signed a set of team agreements on working out engineering and commercial conditions of construction of at least six Suezmax tankers (160 000 thousand ton deadweight each) and of four LNG-tankers with up to 175 thousand ton deadweight in the Primorsk Territory.
