The Aircraft Carrier Admiral Kuznetsov to Be Upgraded at Sevmash, Severodvinsk

The single Russian aircraft carrier Admiral Flota Sovetskogo Soyuza Kuznetsov, part of project 1143.5, is to be upgraded at the shipbuilding facility Sevmash in Severodvinsk (the Arkhangelsk Region). According to The Central Navy Portal, this was communicated by a source in VPK.

Within the framework of upgrading Admiral Kuznetsov is to be equipped with new arms and electronic installations including sea modification of the challenging air defense system Pantsyr (Shield). The aircraft wing is to be extended, too. The design works are to be completed in 2011, upgrading works – in 2917, and after that the ship is to re-join the fleet.

Specialists of the Ukrainian Chernomorsky Plant where the ship was constructed may participate in the upgrade of Admiral Kuznetsov, but there are no relevant agreements signed.

Admiral Flota Sovetskogo Soyuza Kuznetsov is a heavy airborne cruiser, part of project 1143.5, the only Russian aircraft carrier.
