Fishing Quotas for Shipbuilders

August 05, 2010

The Federal Law On Fisheries and Conservation of Aquatic Biological Resources is to be amended so as to give domestic shipbuilders quotas of the catch of aquatic bioresources.

On June 21, 2010, Dmitry Medvedev, President of the Russian Federation, signed a corresponding order. He highlighted that amendments should provide catch quotas assigned to fishing vessels built at Russian shipbuilding enterprises. The quotas are to ensure recoupment within a 10-year period.

RIA Deita quotes an anonymous representative of OAO United Shipbuilding Corporation: “We are satisfied with the President’s decision. Attempts of “Fishing Lobby” to avoid amending the Federal Law On Fisheries and Conservation of Aquatic Biological Resources and meeting with support of first Vice Prime Minister Viktor Zubkov failed. As early as January we will receive quotas of the catch of aquatic bioresources”.

Herman Zverev, president of the Alaska Pollack Producer Association commented on the future amendments too: “We know that on June 21 the Minutes of the Meeting of the Security Council of the Russian Federation dated June 9, 2010, was signed by the President and in accordance with paragraph 1.8 of the minutes amendments are to be made as applicable. Article 2 of the Federal Law On Fisheries and Conservation of Aquatic Biological Resources entitles us to express opinion with regard to these changes. So, we are going to do it at the general meeting to be held on September 6. There will be no weeping and crying — it will be a reasoned, based on world practice view of development of the Russian fishery”.
