In Helsinki in the shipyard ”Arktek”, laid the keels for icebreakers-suppliers.

January 25, 2012

The Russian and Finnish shipbuilders laid the keel in Helsinki for two icebreakers-suppliers, building by order of the Ministry of Transport for use in the Sakhalin oil deposits. Order by the Contractor is a shipyard ”Arktek” / Archtech Helsinki Shipyard Oy / – a joint venture between Russia’s United Shipbuilding Corporation / USC / and STX Finland.

According to the director ”Arktek” Esko Mustamyaki, ”the project will be implemented in cooperation with the Vyborg Shipyard, which is responsible for the building of the shell, and Helsinki shipyard – equipment for the ship.” According to Mustamyaki, the project is interesting not only economically, but also as ”an innovative approach to the design of the vessel: its characteristic feature – patented design with an asymmetric oblique case, and several ship propulsion systems that will work effectively on the front and astern, as well as lateral movement ”. Power of the icebreaker will allow breaking the ice thickness up to a meter and sailing up to 20 days.

The developers emphasize that new icebreakers are innovative multi-functional vessels for use in rescue operations and oil spills. The cost of the project, which will be implemented in 2012-2013 by order of the Ministry of Transport, is estimated at 75 million Euros.

Arctech Helsinki Shipyard Oy founded in 2010, specializes in the building of ships of class icebreaker. Finnish shipbuilders are world leaders in this area – they have built 60 percent of the world’s current icebreaking fleet. Overall, in the framework of bilateral cooperation Finnish shipyards have put more than 1.5 thousand Russian vessels.

In the ceremony of laying the keel of icebreakers took part USC President Roman Trotsenko, President of the Sovkomflot Mr. Frank and Chairman of its board of directors, Ilya Klebanov, his counterpart at the STX Europe Soon Lee Ying.
