Today Dmitry Medvedev, the President of the Russian Federation, supreme commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, will participate in the float out ceremony of the new nuclear-powered submarine Severodvinsk.
According to ITAR-TASS, the ceremony is to take place in Severodvinsk at a common defense shipyard of Sevmash production association. Medvedev will visit the city of shipbuilders for the second time. The first one took place in June, 2009.
The 4th generation multi-purpose nuclear-powered submarine (project 885 “Yasen”) Severodvinsk was designed by the Saint-Petersburg marine engineering bureau Malakhit. The vessel was laid down at Sevmash in 1993. According to the shipyard’s specialists, both economic difficulties and revolutionary hull structure and armament caused delaying of construction. In summer the submarine will be tested, said Vice Admiral Oleg Burtsev, deputy chief of General Naval Staff of the Russian Federation. The fleet is expected to receive Severodvinsk in 2011. After commissioning it, six vessels of the same type are planned for construction.
Today the lead multi-purpose nuclear-powered submarine Severodvinsk is unique both in Russia and in the world. According to publicly available sources, its hull is made of high-strength steel. It is equipped with a floating crew shelter. The vessel is also equipped with atomic energy plant meeting all modern nuclear security requirements.
The vessel is equipped with the new sonar system Ayaks. The basic missile armament is located in eight launchers. The armament also comprises supersonic winget rockets and all-purpose deep-water homing torpedo. The vessel was equipped with latest navigation and communication aids, a revolutionary atomic energy plant and hydraulic jet instead of a screw propeller. The house is oval and the durable hull has 10 compartments. For the first time in the history of the domestic shipbuilding torpedo launchers are located not by the head but behind the central station compartment. This made it possible to place a hydroacoustic antenna in at fore. The ship’s dwt is 8.6-9.5 thousand tons, and its length is approximately 120 m.According to estimations of foreign and domestic experts, Severodvinsk will be as quiet as the American Sea Wolf. At the same time project 885 “Yasen” is much more flexible than its American analogue.
In July, 2009, the second project 885 submarine named Kazan was laid down in the stocks of Sevmash.
During his last visit in July, 2009, Medvedev inter alia called for completion of retrofit of the aerocarrier Admiral Gorshkov for India Navy. The vessel is to be delivered in 2012.
