The Navy Day

July 29, 2010

On the last July Sunday, Russian naval seamen celebrate their holiday. For the first time ever, a USSR government decree dated June 22, 1939, established the holiday. The Russian President decree dated May 31, 2006, this date is appointed to be the memorial day for the Russian Navy.

On July 26, 2010, solemn events and naval reviews took place at main Navy bases of the Northern, Pacific, Baltic, Black Sea fleets and the Caspian Flotilla. About 50 combat ships and submarines together with marine units participated in the celebration.

In Sevastopol, festivities have traditionally started with solemn ceremony of hoisting the national flag and dressing flags on the ships of the Black Sea Fleet of the Russian Federation. Then the naval review of the Russian and Ukrainian fleets began in Southern Bay.

The legendary Kommuna — which under the name Volkhov served yet in the Imperial Russian Navy — had its place of honor at the review.

The review was headed by Vice-Admiral Vladimir Korolev, Commander-In-Chief of the Black Sea Fleet, and Boris Gryzlov, Chairman of the State Duma.

In Saint-Petersburg, a traditional naval review also became the central festive event. The land festive events took place in the very heart of the Northern capital – the Split of Vasilyevsky Island. Military students of Saint-Petersburg marine institutes and training schools marched in front of the Commander-In-Chief of the Baltic Fleet.

In Moscow, celebration of the Navy Day took place in Izmailovsky Park and Kolomenskoe open-air museum. An aquatics celebrations and holiday concert organized by the Navy Command and Moscow government took place at the row canal at Krylatskoe.

Fireworks ended the holiday in a number of Russian cities, at principal naval bases and the Caspian Flotilla.
