Nordic Yards (Germany) to Construct a EUR 100 mln. Arctic-Class Tanker for Norilsk Nickel

March 04, 2010

MMC Norilsk Nickel, OJSC, signed a contract with Nordic Yards Holding GmbH, Germany, for construction of Arc7-class tanker. The construction is to be completed and the vessel to be launched in the end of September, 2011. According to the statement of the Russian company, the project is worth EUR 100 mln.

As explained by Sergey Buzov, Deputy CEO and Head of Transport and Logistics at Norilsk Nickel, the tanker is to deliver POL to Dudinka and transport gas condensate recovered at the Pelyatkinskoe deposit (Taimyr) the to “the continent”. This is to ensure uninterrupted supply of the Norilsk Industrial Region and a number of northern Russian territories with necessary sorts of hydrocarbons, as it is noted in the company.

Nordic Yards was selected to execute the order for construction of the tanker. The company owns yards in Wiesmar where MMC Norilsk Nickel, OJSC, constructed four diesel-electric ships of LU ice classes. “Summarizing the results of several shipping seasons, we can talk of high qualitative characteristics of these vessels and their effective operation in the Arctic conditions which affected the contractor choice to a great extent,” as said in Norilsk Nickel.

The basic Arctic tanker performance specifications are to ensure effective operation of the vessel on the pathways of the Northern Sea Route. The vessel is 169 m long with a beam of 23.1 m, screw shaft capacity is 13,000 kW and full load weight makes 15,000 tons with 9-meter draught and 20,000 tons with 10-meter draught. With Azipod-type propulsion device, the tanker is capable of breaking 1.5 meter ice without an icebreaker support (fully non-escorted transit). Besides, the vessel can conduct freight operations in hard-to-reach water areas and in the conditions of sea and river anchorages which is ensured by a bow propulsion unit, specifically.

The project provides compliance with all effective international conventions and requirements of two classification societies – the Russian Maritime Register of Shipping and Det Norske Veritas (Norway).

The Mining and Metallurgical Company Norilsk Nickel, OJSC, is a diversified mining and metallurgical company as well as the world’s largest producer of nickel and palladium, and one of the leading producers of platinum, cobalt, copper and rhodium. The company also produces gold, silver, iridium, osmium, selenium, ruthenium and tellurium.

Production departments of MMC Norilsk Nickel are in Russia in the Norilsk Industrial Regions and at the Kola Peninsula as well as in Finland, USA, Australia, Botswana and RSA.
