On June 30, 2010, at Baltiysky Zavod the lead offshore power generating unit Akademik Lomonosov, which is to become the main component of the first-ever offshore nuclear heat and power plant (ONHPP) being built by Rosenergoatom Concern, was launched.
According to the Russian Shipping Register, the offshore power generating unit is a non-propelled berth-connected ship. Its length is 140; beam, 30 m, draught, 5.6 m. Number of shift personnel is 64 people. ONHPP is to generate power for remote areas of the High North and Far East of Russia.
According to the First Deputy Director at Innovative Energy Institute of the Russian Scientific Centre “Kurchatov Institute” Vyacheslav Kuznetsov, there are no analogues to this offshore unit in the world, and none is foreseen.
The first unit will be delivered to Kamchatka; and at Baltiysky Zavod the second ONHPP is laid down which is to eliminate dependence of the Russian North from so called “north delivery” (deliveries of goods to the Northern Territories of Russia).
