Unsurprisingly, the shipbuilding industry has become a leader in terms of the industry production growth rate in 2010 in the Arkhangelsk region.
As reported by Ilya Mikhalchuk, the governor of the region, last year the industrial production index in the region reached 115%, which is higher than the average rate across Russia
The output of shipbuilding in the Arkhangelsk region increased by 51% in 2010. According to Nikolai Kalistratov, the director general of one of the two leading shipbuilding companies in the region, JSC “PO” Sevmash”, the increased production at his plant is associated in the first place with the increase in the number of non-governmental orders over the past year.
«Sevmash» has finished the construction of the world’s largest ice-resistant platform “Prirazlomnaya”. Also, the company is nearing the completion of an upgrade of an aircraft carrier “Admiral Gorshkov” for the Indian Navy.
2011 also promises to be successful for the shipbuilding industry in Arkhangelsk region due to the fact that “Sevmash” and “Zvyozdochka” have already a complete backlog. This year “Sevmash” plans to transfer three nuclear submarines to the Russian Navy and “Zvyozdochka” was awarded a governmental contract for the maintenance of nearly 300 ships.
