February 19, 2010

In January, container transshipment showed improvement.

On January 2010 results, the largest Russian sea ports show improvement of containerized cargo transshipment figures as compared to the same period of 2009. Freight traffic is also improving. However, it is too far from pre-crisis figures.

In January, 2010, the Commercial Port of Vladivostok processed 21 thousand TEU of containerized cargoes. Of that, imported cargoes amounted to 5 thousand TEU, and exported ones nearly 8 thousand TEU. According to Sergey Lopunov, Production Director CPV, OJSC, the performance of last January made it possible to carry out the 1 quarter plan by half. Cargo turnover in January, 2010, is twice the amount of the figures of the same period of the last year. The major part of transshipment is exported cargoes (metal products and coke).

In January, 2010, the container terminal of the Novorossiysk Commercial Sea Port (NCSP) processed 20 thousand TEU of containerized cargoes. Of that, imported and exported cargoes amounted to 6 thousand TEU each. The increase comparing to the same period of the last year amounted to 6.5%.

For the review period, the container turnover of the Big Port of Saint Petersburg amounted to 112 thousands TEU. Of that, over 76 thousand TEU are accounted for the First Container Terminal (FCT, Saint-Petersburg) being a member of the National Container Company (NCC). Of that, imported cargoes amounted to 39 thousand TEU, and exported ones nearly 37 thousand TEU. The refrigerating container turnover amounted 8.8 thousand TEU (+53.8% comparing to January, 2009).

For January, 2010, total cargo turnover growth for the terminal as compared to the same period of the last year amounts to 20.7%.

In this February, FCT processing is to grow by 20% as compared to the same period of the last year, amounting to 84 thousand TEU. According to the source in FCT, the growth against the previous month is to amount to 10%.

“The rehabilitation of the container market is obvious and, despite the less amount of days in February comparing to January, we show growth in cargo turnover,” said the source in FCT. According to him, the customer base has not changed – there are no new items.

In January, 2010, FCT cargo processing grew by 20.7% as compared to the same period of the last year. The cargo turnover amounted 76.4 thousand TEU.
