The Russian Navy’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier is set to be finished by 2023. This news was brought to journalists by Roman Trotsenko, who heads the United Shipbuilding Coroporation (OSK), on 30 June 2011 at the 5th International Maritime Defence Show in St.Petersburg.
According to Trotsenko, OSK is launching the design of the Russian aircraft carrier in 2016 in order to start its construction in 2018.
Previously, the former USSR and Russia were equipped with aircraft carriers with deadweight up to 50 ths ton. Contrastingly, the new carrier will be significantly bigger with a deadweight about 80 000t and a nuclear power plant, as remarked by Trotsenko.
The end of last year, the RF Ministry of Defense announced plans to construct four nuclear-powered aircraft carriers.
That said, the USA Navy has been operating nuclear-powered aircraft carriers since 1975. Aircraft carriers equipped with a nuclear power plant are also in service in the French Navy.
