United Shipbuilding Corporation bought in a 50%-share in Helsinki shipyard STX Europe for 150 million euros. The purchase will be financed out of the shipyard carry-forward.
United Shipbuilding Corporation also bought 20.4% of shares of design bureau Aker Arctic Technology Inc., a member of STX Europe. The corporation will have its share in these companies as part of a joint venture that is to be established in the near future.
The engineering know-how of the arctic shipbuilding is expected to be centered at the Helsinki shipyard. STX Finland Oy and Aker Arctic Technology Inc. are one of the global leaders in design and construction of icebreaking fleet. According to the source, their interest in the collaboration with United Shipbuilding Corporation is aroused by the plans of Sovcomflot group, the major Russian shipping company, to order new ice ships for the shelf development. The Sovcomflot expansion programme involves the fleet build-up for the shelf field maintenance. The company intends to allocate for these purposes 36% of the fleet renewal total investment for the period up to 2015, that is about 2 milliard dollars. What is important, the ships are to meet the requirements of such major offshore oil and gas companies as Exxon Mobile, Shell, Gazprom.
The RF Ministry of Transport programme for the arctic cargo fleet development till 2020 was reported earlier to project the delivery of about 60 ships, including 18 tankers. At least 9 new icebreakers, including 3 nuclear ones are needed to operate on the Northern Sea Route alone. United Shipbuilding Corporation regards the ice ships construction as the key focus area. At present the corporation’s stock of orders is worth 135 milliard roubles.
STX Europe AS is the European division of international industrial corporation STX Business Group (Korea). STX Europe has control over 6 shipyards in Finland, France and Norway and it works to construct cruisers, ferry and special craft. STX Europe is the majority shareholder of Aker Arctic Technology Inc.
