Volga-Don Shipping Canal Cargo Transit is to Be Increased by 10%

According to IA Regnum, Igor Koblev, head of FGU Volga-Don State Basin Management for Waterways and Navigation, stated that the staff of the Volga-Don Shipping Canal are to increase cargo transit by 10% in the course of year 2010 navigation.
According to Koblev, to gain this objective, the canal’s structures are to be fundamentally upgraded. In 2010, estimated allowances for equipment repair will be three times as much than last year. This repair is to ensure trouble-free and safe ship transition.
As the press-service of the Administration of the Volgograd Region reported to IA Regnum, Gennady Churikov noticed that in terms of transshipment, the Volga-Don Shipping Canal is a strategic point not only of our region but of the entire country.
In 2009, over 90 thousands locking-through cycles took place and 8.16 mln. tons of cargoes were transported in the Volga-Don Ship Canal.
