In the Soviet times marine fleet was making 3-4 billion rubbles of net profit per year. Today the amount is twice smaller.
The above statistics is given by Aleksey Klyavin, Head of the State policy department for marine and river transport.
Apart from falling profits and rising expenses, sluggish marine sector means fewer work places. 1 work place in the shipping sector creates 50 work places on the land, 1 work place in shipbuilding – 70 work places in other sectors.
Today the Russian international ship register includes 360 ships with the total deadweight of 1.5 million tonnes. The Transport Ministry and the Ministry of Industry and Trade have recently prepared a draft law on Supportive measures for the Russian shipbuilding and shipping sectors. It has already been submitted to the Government. The law will hopefully encourage ship owners to replace and renovate their vessels.
Ports development is also one the priorities in the near future. These days only 40% of Russian ports are suitable for deep water vessels.
